Glove Cheese Toast, 2024 by Dudi Ben Simon
October is my birthday month, so I thought I’d celebrate with some fun posts. Today’s is all about the way you see things. Different perspectives make me so curious, and there’s nothing like the feeling you get when you see something a new way, and it creeps into your perception of that object forever. How cool.
Artist Dudi Ben Simon is a master at blending unrelated objects in his photographs to captivate the viewer with a new perspective.

“Since studying history of art at school, I was fascinated with what can be made by using objects and daily pieces when they are disconnected from their original use,” Simon explains on Instagram.

The idea started with a picture of bowls looking like a sleeve: “while sitting on the couch, I saw a pile of bowls on the counter; it looked to me like a sleeve, the next day I took a picture of it”, says Dudi.

“I follow two main principles: I make sure I maintain the original appearance of the objects so that the viewers can recognize them, and I add a twist that introduces a new perspective.” Dudi Ben Simon

Readymades are a genre of art that involves selecting ordinary objects and recontextualizing them as works of art.
How does Ben Simon’s use of these famous faces to increase the meaning and the impact of the photo above?
How does the concept of authorship change when artists select mass-produced objects as art, as seen in readymades, instead of creating pieces by hand?
What role does context (gallery, museum, public space) play in transforming an ordinary object into a readymade, and how does this shift affect the viewer's perception?

Create a piece of art using everyday objects that you wouldn't normally consider 'art.' Choose one or two found items—like a household object, tool, or discarded item—and present them in a new way. Think about how the context, placement, and title of your piece can transform these objects into something that makes viewers question their meaning or purpose. Focus on letting the objects speak for themselves rather than altering them. How can you change the way people see something ordinary?
