Seeing Hearts Everywhere I Go
Sweet Street Heart, Shannon Steven, 2022
There is a concept in psychology called the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, also known as the frequency illusion, where once you purchase a new car, you start seeing it everywhere. The idea is that there is an attentional 'awakening' to the object that now holds value to you. (phenosys.com) I recently noticed a perfect little heart-shaped dent in the sidewalk on a walk. Then I passed a heart-shaped leaf and another… I always walk with my camera, collecting images of beautiful and interesting things. Walking in this way keeps me in the moment.
See
Check out the heart-shaped things I found on my walk. Next time you go on a walk, keep your eyes peeled for an attractive shape, color, or texture. As you find more, take pictures. Soon you’ll be seeing additions to your collection everywhere you go! Collections are cool. They give us a goal and the pleasure of achieving it.
Say
I think of artists as those who share their vision and the wonder of the human experience. In my opinion, being an artist is not only reserved for the few with technical ability and conceptual insight. Though life would not be the same without these visionaries, I am inspired by artists who challenge the hallowed title, ARTIST (read: 'ahr-teest').
Do you think everyone is an artist? Why or why not?
Which quote resonates most with you? Why?
Do you have a collection? What is it, and why do you collect?
Do
Next time you go on a walk, keep your eyes peeled for an interesting shape, color, or texture. Then, as you find more, take more pictures. Soon you’ll be seeing additions to your collection everywhere you go!
Rules:
1. Find an interesting shape, color, or texture in everyday objects.
2. Objects should be found or discovered. Try not to manipulate anything to create your image. (Sometimes, the object is what is not there but in the negative space.)
3. Zoom into the object and take a picture.
4. Create your own collection!
